Astrology has been transformed in this 21st century with the merging of traditional astrology with modern astrology. With 25 years of research, Naomi Bennett shows the underlying design behind the original form of astrology that was created by the Egyptians and handed down to the Hellenistic Greeks. The missing pieces in astrology are based on astronomical observation by the Egyptians who left behind images that are the key to the structure of sign and house rulership and even aspects. The expansion of research beyond written fragmentary Greek text gives a rounded view on how astrology was structured from the beginning. Amazingly, new advances in fractal geometry, the discovery of the Fibonacci numbers and the value of Phi add to the connection of hidden mathematical design that is embedded within astrology. The author has benefited from mentors like Carl Payne Tobey and Robert Hand to find the references that will guide the merger of the old and modern astrology in this coming Age of Aquarius. This coming Age is examined in a new, visual way that makes it easy to see how precession was measured by the ancient world.

Review by Serina Arlene: I have been studying astrology for over 12 years and 2 years in depth under the tutelage of another of Carl Payne Tobey's former students. As soon as Diane Clarke introduced me to Tobey's research and methodology, I was hooked. It made so much more sense and clicked in a way that standard house/sign rulership never did. I am so glad that Naomi has published this extremely informative and insightful book. She connects many dots that standard astrology does not. She spent years traveling the globe looking for out of the way clues to the ancient foundations of astrology that would complement and add credence to CPT's theories and research and she presents the information in an intelligent, easy to read and understand format that anyone from a beginner to a seasoned astrologer can understand. I especially loved that she touches on the fractal nature of the universe and astrology, as I have yet to read those particular connections in any other published book. Bottom line: If you are an astrologer, you really need to read Naomi's book. You WILL learn something new.

Foundations of Astrology 1 Naomi Bennett Ehsan Khazeni Reviews

Spoke with the author briefly as she was advertising her book on Facebook. She claimed Mars is the natural ruler of Scorpio and Pluto is the natural ruler of Aries and this book had astronomical evidence to prove so. When I questioned it the only thing she could tell me was to "read the book".

So, let's go over some of what we know astronomically about Pluto

Pluto is the slowest movin planet in our Solar System. Pluto has an ocean below its frozen surface. Pluto's declination of the ecliptic reaches both the highest and lowest points. Pluto receives the least amount of heat and light from the Sun being the furthest away from it.

So, Scorpio being fixed water is often likened to being much a like glacier. Scorpio is slow to change and stubborn, Scorpio is a sign of extremes. Scorpio is also dark and mysterious. Astronomically, Pluto sounds a whole lot like... Scorpio!

How she equates such a dark, frozen and slow-moving planet to the cardinal fire of the fiery and quick-tempered sign of Aries astronomically is... nonsense. All she could say though was "buy my book."
Brilliant ideas by a forward thinker. I couldn't always follow the thread - but what I could understand was well written.

Naomi Bennett I am half way with my reading of your book and I have to really say you are right on with the sign order! Below is the Chinese version of the horoscope. If you look at the order of the sign, it is the reverse order of the traditional sign placement. The medieval astrology text that was translated into Chinese in the Ming Dynasty do not have any sign/house natural rulership! The signification of each houses are the same as what we use, but no where in the book says the first house is Aries.

Book Reviews The Mountain Astrologer magazine, Aug./Sept. 2015 p.83

Foundations of Astrology is Naomi Bennett’s attempt to “aid our astrological community in rediscovering its roots and foundations.” To this end, her book contains a wealth of insightful information which will satisfy astrologers of all levels. Beginners — and those familiar with the basics but looking for a more nuanced portrayal — will especially enjoy the detailed explorations of the signs in the chapters “Water and Earth, Signs of the Past” and “Fire and Air, Signs of the Future.” In these chapters, Bennett presents her own ideas and shares some ideas from one of her teachers, Carl Payne Tobey. Here, Bennett’s intention is to explore the “deeper emotional drives” of the signs. She writes, “If the basic psychological underpinnings are understood, then behaviors can be understood.”

More experienced astrologers will appreciate a reasoned voice discussing topics not often written about, such as issues relating to the links between sign and house rulerships, factors affecting house construction, and how one might best approach making reliable predictions. Bennett favors transits over progressed, directed, or planetary period methods, and she provides an in depth look at various ways to use transits. The chapter entitled “Reliable Predictions” features sections on transits (including diagrams of the graphic ephemeris), solar returns, planetary nodes, declinations and Out of Bounds (OOB), Solar Arabic Parts, dispositorship, rulership, and decans.

Geometry and astronomy are explored, adding depth to Bennett’s discussion of astrology’s origins. She writes “I believe that a broader perspective is needed to get to the fundamentals of its beginnings. I have found that my knowledge of astrology has been expanded much more widely when I started reading books in other fields of study like archeoastronomy, ancient history, astronomy and the belief systems of other cultures like the Incas and Mayans.”

In the chapter “Sign Rulership with Hellenistic Planetary Order,” Bennett explores how the planets link to the signs they rule, and she presents ideas about how to incorporate the outer planets into this system using the planets’ “average mean distance to the Earth.” Based on this, Bennett works with a sign rulership system that gives Uranus to Aquarius, Neptune to Pisces, and Pluto to Aries (Mars is given to Scorpio). Continuing this theory, Bennett posits that there are two more planets to be discovered that would eventually be given rulership over Taurus and Gemini.

In “Horoscope Construction,” Bennett discusses approaching the chart through a combination of using Equal Houses and then adding in the Mid¬ heaven as a floating point, writing, “I see the Equal House chart as a refinement of the Whole Sign houses.” She also contends that “the cusp is the cen¬ ter of the house and that the house extends 15 degrees on either side of the cusp.” There is discussion on how certain house systems lead to distortion in the size of the houses as the latitude increases, and she touches on out of sign aspects and aspects as houses.

Bennett makes a compelling argument for the view that we are already in the Age of Aquarius, via consideration of the constellations that rise at the solstices and equinoxes. The author’s thorough approach — supporting her points with historical diagrams and images— lends weight to her ideas. She discusses the good and bad sides of having so much astrological information avail¬ able at the touch of a button, thanks to the advent of the computer age. She charges that we should each be a “critical observer” of astrology.

You, too, could do the detailed research that Bennett has done, or you could simply curl up with her book and enjoy the best of what she has discovered. In that way, Foundations of Astrology acts as a primer on the many links between different fields and the origins of astrology. Numerous diagrams and images of ancient works and geometrical principles are presented to illustrate the concepts that Bennett explores, which include a discussion of the symbolism and meanings behind numbers, as well as reference to the Fibonacci Numbers and fractal geometry.

The author has written an organized survey of several important topics associated with the foundations of astrology. Going beyond the general modern themes, her work is grounded in solid research and backed up with insightful diagrams. Each chapter is rounded out by extensive footnotes, which means you can go a little deeper with points that grab your interest.

Naomi Bennett’s Foundations of Astrology contributes to many of the ongoing and emerging debates about the history and development of astrology. It’s a thought provoking read that will challenge you to question any shaky assumptions you might have about astrology and its beginnings. It’s a slim book and, for an engaged reader, a fairly quick read, but the information contained herein will continue to get you thinking for days afterwards.
